World famous tabla player and Padma Vibhushan Ustad Zakir Hussain has passed away. His family confirmed this on Monday morning. According to the family, Hussain was suffering from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
The family said that he was admitted to a hospital in San Francisco for the last two weeks. When his condition worsened, he was admitted to the ICU. He breathed his last there.
Zakir was born on 9 March 1951 in Mumbai. Ustad Zakir Hussain was awarded the Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2002 and Padma Vibhushan in 2023.
The news of Zakir Hussain came late on Sunday night. India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting also shared a post regarding his demise. But later it was removed. After this, Zakir’s sister and nephew Aamir had said that the news of Zakir’s death was wrong.
Zakir Hussain had also received three Grammy Awards. His father’s name was Ustad Allah Rakha Qureshi and mother’s name was Biwi Begum. Zakir’s father Allah Rakha was also a tabla player. Zakir Hussain received his early education from St. Michael’s School in Mahim, Mumbai. Apart from this, he did his graduation from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai.
Zakir Hussain performed his first concert in America at the age of just 11. In 1973 he launched his first album ‘Living in the Material World’.
The news of his death first came on Sunday, but was later denied by the family.

Zakir Hussain also worked in a 1998 film Saaz. His opposite in this film was Shabana Azmi. Zakir Hussain played the role of Shabana’s lover in this film.
Zakir Hussain was also offered the role of Salim’s younger brother in the film Mughal-e-Azam (1960), but his father did not approve of it at that time. He wanted his son to concentrate only on music.
