The troubles of Adani Group, which is surrounded by allegations of bribery in America, are increasing. The interim government of Bangladesh has accused Indian businessman Gautam Adani’s company Adani Power of violating power agreements worth billions of dollars.
Reuters report claims that Adani Power has withheld tax benefits from India to the power plants covered under this agreement.
Sheikh Hasina government of Bangladesh had signed an agreement with Adani Power in 2017 for the purchase of electricity. Under this agreement, Adani Power was to supply electricity to Bangladesh from its power plant in Jharkhand. According to Reuters report, Bangladesh wants to renegotiate this agreement.
According to the report, the electricity received from this plant is expensive compared to other plants. Reuters has cited documents related to the deal and interviews of 7 officials in its report.
The interim government argues that Sheikh Hasina had handed over this agreement to Adani without any tender.
Bangladesh delaying payment to Adani Power
Adani Power started supplying electricity to Bangladesh in July 2023. However Bangladesh is not paying the electricity bill. Dhaka owes hundreds of millions of dollars in outstanding payments. Speaking to Reuters, Bangladesh’s Energy Minister Mohammad Faizal Kabir said the country now has the capacity to operate without Adani’s electricity.
Adani Power has already halved power supply to Bangladesh due to outstanding bills. According to Adani Power, Bangladesh owes 846 million dollars i.e. about Rs 7200 crore. After this step of Adani Power, Bangladesh also halved its demand.
This agreement signed between Bangladesh and Adani Power in 2017 is for 25 years. Under this, Adani Power is supplying electricity from 2 units of the power plant located in Jharkhand.
The capacity of this plant is 1600 MW.
Case filed against Adani in America for bribery
A case regarding bribery was registered in the Federal Court of New York, America on October 24. It was alleged that Adani had given or was planning to give a bribe of $ 265 million (about Rs 2200 crore) to Indian officials to get contracts related to solar energy in India.
This entire matter is related to Adani Group company Adani Green Energy Limited and another firm. This case was registered in the Federal Court of New York on 24 October 2024. In its hearing on Wednesday i.e. November 20, Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, Vineet S Jain, Ranjit Gupta, Cyril Cabenis, Saurabh Aggarwal, Deepak Malhotra and Rupesh Aggarwal have been made accused.
According to Reuters report, arrest warrants have also been issued against Gautam Adani and Sagar. Sagar is an officer of Adani Green Energy Limited.
