Independence is being celebrated in Bangladesh for the first time after the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina. On this occasion, on Monday, the head of the interim government, Mohammad Yunus, has made a big announcement regarding the elections in the country. Yunus said that elections can be held in Bangladesh by the end of 2025 or the first half of 2026.
Mohammad Yunus said that I have always emphasized that some important reforms should be made before the elections. If political parties agree on some necessary reforms, elections can be held by the end of 2025.
Mohammad Yunus said-
We have to decide that the names of those who have become eligible to vote in the last 15 years should be included in the voter list. After the student revolt, there is no room for error as many youth will vote for the first time in a long time.
The last elections in Bangladesh were held in January 2024, just 7 months later, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was overthrown on 5 August 2024 due to the student movement.
Yunus gave a televised speech on the 53rd independence anniversary of Bangladesh.
“There will be big changes in the country before the elections” Mohammad Yunus has said that some major changes will be made before the elections in the country. A commission will be formed for this. It has been named National Consensus Framing Commission. On the recommendations of this commission, a consensus will be formed with all the political parties to conduct elections in Bangladesh.
Under the leadership of Mohammad Yunus, this commission will give recommendations regarding reforms on the Constitution, election system, judiciary, police administration, anti-corruption and public administration. After this, work on them will be started within a month.
From this Earlier this morning, President Mohammad Shahabuddin and interim government chief adviser Mohammad Yunus paid tribute to the martyrs at the National Memorial in the capital Dhaka. Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan on this day in 1971 with the help of India.
Eight Indian soldiers and two serving officers involved in the 1971 war have arrived in Dhaka today to participate in Bangladesh’s Victory Day celebrations. Eight freedom fighters of Mukti Vahini and two army officers from Bangladesh have reached Kolkata.
On 16 December 1971, 90 thousand soldiers of Pakistan Army surrendered to India. After this Bangladesh got independence from Pakistan.
The movement against reservation had carried out a coup In Bangladesh, on June 5, the High Court had implemented 30% quota system in jobs, after which the students of universities in Dhaka were protesting. This reservation was being given to the families of freedom fighters. When this reservation was abolished, students started demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Within no time, a large number of students and common people came out on the streets against the Prime Minister and his government.
Two months after this protest, on August 5, Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and left Bangladesh and came to India. After this the army took command of the country.
This footage of Sheikh Hasina is from 5th August. She is boarding a helicopter. According to media reports, he had less than 1 hour to leave the country.
Election process in Bangladesh is similar to Lok Sabha elections in India. Bangladesh also has the same electoral process as India’s Lok Sabha elections. Here, members of Parliament are elected through the first-past-the-post system, just like in India. That means the candidate who gets even one more vote will win.
After the election results are declared, the MPs of the largest party or alliance elect their leader and he becomes the Prime Minister. The President administers the oath of office as the Prime Minister of the country.
There are a total of 350 seats in the Parliament here. Of these, 50 seats are reserved for women. There are no elections for reserved seats, while general elections are held every five years for 300 seats. Apart from the Lok Sabha, there is also the Rajya Sabha in the Parliament of India, but there is only one house in the Parliament of Bangladesh.
The Parliament of Bangladesh is called ‘Jatiyo Sansad’ or House of the Nation. Its new building was completed on 15 February 1982.
Who is the head of government in Bangladesh? Answer: Like India, in Bangladesh also the Prime Minister is the head of the government. The President is the head of the country, elected by the national parliament.
In Bangladesh the President is only a ceremonial post and has no real control over the government. Till 1991, the President was directly elected by the people here too, but later constitutional changes were made. Through this, the President started being elected by the Parliament. Sheikh Hasina was the Prime Minister of Bangladesh for 20 years.
How is the Parliament of Bangladesh? The Parliament of Bangladesh is called ‘Jatiyo Sansad’ or House of the Nation. Its new building was completed on 15 February 1982. It is built on 200 acres. Bangladesh is the only Muslim majority nation in the world which has reserved seats especially for women in its parliament. The tenure of Parliament is five years like in India. It can also be increased in emergency.
Tension in India-Bangladesh relations after the coup There has been tension in India-Bangladesh relations since the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina. India has expressed displeasure over the attacks on Hindus and minorities in Bangladesh. At the same time, Bangladesh has termed India’s allegations as the result of propaganda.
However, since the coup, Hindu religious places and Hindu leaders are being targeted at various places in Bangladesh. ISKCON-affiliated religious leader Chinmoy Krishna Das has been in police custody since November 25 on charges of treason.
Last month, in a report released by Transparency International Bangladesh, it was said that violence against Hindus has increased in the first 100 days of the interim government of Bangladesh. The Yunus administration has failed to stop crimes against minorities.
According to this report, between August 5 and 20, more than 2 thousand cases of crimes against minorities were reported, in which 9 minorities were killed. In these cases, the government has been negligent in identifying and punishing the criminals.
