The Batman director has confirmed that the long-awaited sequel will start shooting next year in 2025.
In a conversation for Variety between director Matt Reeves and actress Zoe Kravitz, who worked together on The Batman where Kravitz played Catwoman, the two briefly discussed the status of the sequel. “We’re finishing the script. We’re going to shoot next year,” Reeves confirmed.
Good news for anyone waiting for an update on The Batman sequel. The first film, starring Robert Pattinson as Batman, was a radical new take on the superhero and tonally split the difference between the grounded realism of Christopher Nolan’s films, with some of the more gothic elements seen in Tim Burton’s films. It was released in 2022, meaning it was quite a long wait for a sequel.
We got some Batman-related goodness this year thanks to Max spinoff series The Penguin starring Colin Ferrell. Focusing on the rise of mobsters who would become known as The Penguins, the miniseries was well-received and it seems that there may be more future seasons based on conversations between Reeves and Kravitz.
“We’re talking with (showrunner) Lawrence (LeFranc) about doing another season,” Reeves said when asked about the reception to the first season of The Penguins. “It was a special experience. I just feel really lucky. These characters aren’t mine; they belong in the world. You can approach them in a way that reveals something personal.”
The Penguin was an honorable mention in IGN’s Best TV Shows of 2024 when IGN gave Batman a perfect score of 10 when it first premiered. You can read our Batman review here.
