As autumn continues in the Northern Hemisphere and the outside temperature drops, it tends to become more comfortable settings, suitable for chamber music. Covering this month are two outstanding releases that fit the bill. One is a violin sonata by friends Brahms and Schumann, performed by the husband-and-wife team of Yuko Shiokawa and Andreas Schiff. Other features chamber works by Igor Stravinsky, conducted by Barbara Hannigan (pictured). Cellist Yo-Yo Ma and longtime partner Catherine Stott have said a heartfelt “thank you” to each other as they retire from performing on the Mercy album. Also explored are several piano albums, New American compositions, and early holiday music.
