One killed in Cybertruck explosion in Elon Musk‘s Tesla car
Newly elected US President Donald Trump is going to be sworn in on January 20. Just before that, he had to face an accident. A car exploded in front of his hotel, Trump International, in Las Vegas, America. The car was a Tesla Cybertruck from Trump’s close ally Elon Musk. Police are investigating whether Trump or Musk had any connection to the incident.
The BBC reported, citing Las Vegas police, that the explosion occurred at 8:40 am local time on Wednesday. The driver of the truck was killed, and seven people were injured. However, the condition of the injured was not serious.
Police said that the truck, rented from Colorado, arrived in Las Vegas yesterday morning. Two hours later, the truck was parked near the Trump International Hotel. The truck was carrying canisters full of fuel and fireworks. The truck first started emitting smoke and then exploded.
At a press conference in the afternoon, Sheriff Kevin McMahill released footage of the explosion and photos of the aftermath. The footage and photos show canisters and large fireworks in the truck. Investigators found gas and fuel canisters and fireworks debris in the truck.
McMahill said they are also investigating whether the incident could have any connection to the owner of the hotel, Donald Trump, or Tesla owner Elon Musk. “Obviously, a Cybertruck, a Trump hotel—there are a lot of questions that we need to answer,” he said.
The explosion is being investigated for possible links to the New Year’s Eve car-ramming incident in New Orleans, Louisiana. Some initial explosive devices were found near the scene. The Orleans incident killed 15 people.
The FBI said it was investigating whether it was a terrorist attack. However, authorities said the driver, who died at the scene, had not yet been identified. There was also no evidence of an Islamic State (IS) connection to the incident. FBI Special Agent Jeremy Schwarz told reporters, “We know this is a terrorist attack, and everyone is interested in knowing. Our goal is to confirm it and get the right answers.”
Sheriff McMahill said the vehicle that was used in the New Orleans attack, as well as the Tesla Cybertruck, were both rented from an app-based car rental company called Turo. Turo said in a statement that it was assisting authorities in Las Vegas and New Orleans in this regard. The people who rented the cars did not have any criminal records that could be considered a security risk. The name of the person who rented the car was known, but it was not confirmed whether he was driving the car.
The hotel is partly owned by President-elect Donald Trump’s company. In a post on X, Trump’s son Eric Trump said, “There was a fire in an electric vehicle at Port Kosher in Trump Las Vegas. Guests and employees have been safely evacuated. We are grateful to the Las Vegas Fire Department and local law enforcement for their quick and professional response.’
Stephen Ferlando, who witnessed the incident from the 53rd floor of Trump Tower, told the Washington Post, ‘It was definitely an explosion. The windows were shaking.’
Trump has been by his side since the beginning of his election campaign, with Elon Musk, the world’s richest man. Trump has appointed Musk to co-chair his government efficiency advisory commission. Musk’s closeness with Trump has grown so much that he has started staying at Trump’s house. Tesla owner Elon Musk is renting a cottage at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. Their closeness raises questions about whether the explosion was a mere accident, a deliberate attack, or an indirect threat.
