Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for DC Studios’ upcoming Superman movie.
The two minute and 22 second long trailer offers a detailed look at not only David Kornshwaite’s Clark Kent/Superman, but also Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor. We also see several supporting superheroes, including Eddie Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific, Isabella Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, and Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho.
Meanwhile, we get a glimpse of Superman at his old-school best: saving the life of an innocent child. At the other end of the scale, we see two of Superman’s giant monsters in the movie: a fire-breathing, skyscraper-sized kaiju, and another sonic tentacle monster that shoots energy beams.
But the star of the show is Krypto the dog, who rescues Superman in a surprisingly vulnerable state: battered, bruised and bleeding, prone on a snowy surface. Superman whistles for Krypto, who rushes to his aid. Superman pushes his cape to Krypto’s nose and asks to be taken home.
In a Q&A with writer and director James Gunn on IGN, the DC studio co-head explained the thinking behind showing Superman in such a state in the first trailer for the film.
“I think it was important to be able to see that he was up against something that could hurt him,” Gunn said. “And so to see him there in a vulnerable moment, you go, ‘Wow. Oh yeah.’ It’s something that a lot of people see in the trailer, they’re like, ‘Oh my god, I haven’t seen that before. What the heck is that coming from?’ “
Other moments in the trailer include what appears to be a rebellion by Superman’s supporters, an angry mob throwing objects at Superman as he solemnly walks into a building, and the already established romantic relationship between Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane.
Superman hits theaters on July 11, 2025, and is the first film in the first chapter of the DCU: Gods and Monsters. IGN’s new trailer features all the DC heroes and villains explained, James Gunn’s comments on Krypto actually being a pretty scary dog in the movie, how Superman thinks about hope, and more.
