Olaf Scholz shakes hands with his ministers after losing the vote of confidence.
In Germany, a no-confidence motion against Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been passed in the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament. According to Reuters, voting on the no-confidence motion was held in Germany’s 733-seat lower house on Monday. In this, 394 members voted against Scholz, 207 MPs supported him, while 116 members abstained.
Scholz needed the support of 367 MPs to gain a majority. Immediately after the voting results came, Chancellor Olaf Scholz appealed to German President Frank Walter Steinmeier to dissolve the parliament and hold new elections.
The Chancellor in Germany is like the Prime Minister in India. Chancellor Scholz had asked for time till January 15 to obtain the confidence vote. Now according to the Constitution, the German President will have to dissolve the lower house of the German Parliament within 21 days and hold fresh general elections within 60 days. If this happens then elections will be held in the country 7 months before time.
In the general elections held in 2021, Scholz’s SDP party got 206 seats, the Greens Party got 118 seats and the Free Democratic Party got 92 seats. The three parties had formed a coalition and formed the government.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz needed the support of 367 MPs to gain majority, but only 207 MPs supported him.
Alliance broken over budget cuts This political crisis in Germany started when Chancellor Scholz dismissed his Finance Minister Christian Lindner in November. After this decision of Scholz, his SDP party’s three-year-old alliance with the Greens Party and Christian Lindner’s Free Democratic Party was broken.
After the breakup of the alliance, his centre-left government was reduced to minority. The reason for the break of the alliance was the dispute in the country regarding the federal budget of 2025.
Actually, Germany’s economy has gone haywire due to the Russia-Ukraine war. After America, Germany is providing the most economic help to Ukraine. To fix the German economy, the Chancellor wanted to take more loans from financial institutions, but the Finance Minister was opposing it. They were insisting on cutting expenses.
According to the German website Deutsche Welle, Chancellor Scholz wanted to increase the Ukraine aid package from Rs 27 thousand crore to Rs 1.63 lakh crore. The Finance Minister had rejected it. Regarding this, Scholz said that Lindner is not worried about the world. He is concentrating on a small objective. In response, Lindner said that he did not want to impose more taxes on the people of the country.
After this, SDP and Greens Party opposed Lindner’s decision and said that his decision will fail most of the programs of the government. As the alliance fell apart, Scholz accused Lindner of being small-minded and arrogant.

How is the Chancellor chosen? Like India, Germany also has democracy and parliamentary system, but the method of electing the Chancellor is different. It is not necessary to announce the name of the Prime Ministerial candidate before the elections in India. In Germany, all parties are required to disclose the name of the Chancellor candidate. Elections are fought in his name and face. If his party or coalition wins the election, it has to muster a majority in the Bundestag.
Before Olaf Scholz, Angela Merkel was the Chancellor of Germany for 16 years.
How is government formed If any party or alliance gets majority then there is no problem. If this does not happen, then even after the elections, a government can be formed with coalition or support on the lines of our country. A common program is decided. It is necessary to give this information to the Parliament. Parliament meets within 30 days after the elections.
No party got majority after Second World War After the fall of Hitler in the Second World War in Germany, no party has got majority till date. Since then, coalition governments have been running continuously in Germany. However, Hitler also formed a coalition government. Later, after dissolving the Parliament, he became Chancellor for life.
