Cult classic zombie movie 28 Days Later has a digital release date, Sony announced a week after the first trailer for the sequel 28 Years Later went viral.
After a long period of unavailability online, Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later will be available to rent or buy digitally starting tomorrow, December 18, 2024. Expect it to pop up in Prime Video’s preferences from then on
28 Days Later was one of Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy’s breakout roles in 2002. He played Jim, a bicycle courier who awakens from a coma to find himself in a post-apocalyptic London after an aggression-inducing virus leads to the breakdown of society. Murphy failed to return after 2007’s 28 Weeks, which followed a different cast of characters. But he’s the executive producer of 28 Years Later, and has a mysterious role in the film (no, he’s not the zombie in the trailer).
The official blurb attached to this re-release 28 Days Later reads “Back to day one…”
Animal rights activists free a group of infected chimpanzees for terrifying results in this speculative sci-fi horror effort from Trainspotting director Danny Boyle. Waking up from a coma in a secluded London hospital after 28 days, cycle courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) is led into mysterious confusion on deserted city streets.
Joining forces with another group of survivors after a terrifying encounter in a seemingly abandoned church, Jim soon learns the truth behind the deserted streets and the terrifying creatures lurking in the shadows.
It was soon revealed that the chimpanzees harbored a deadly virus that sent its victims into a frenzied, murderous rage, and in the days following initial exposure, the entire population was nearly wiped out by a killing spree. Is there still a glimmer of hope for humanity — or has the deadly “Rage” virus landed on foreign shores and infected the entire planet?
Boyle returns as director after 28 years, on June 20, 2025, as does screenwriter Alex Garland.
