Ask your partner these questions
In a video called ‘Ten Questions to Ask Your Sweetie Before You Become Exclusive’, licensed counselor Jeff Guenther shares several important questions.
- What is deception in your eyes?
It is important to understand what your partner perceives as cheating, both physically and emotionally. People can have very different ideas about cheating, so talk about things like flirting with others, liking attractive people on social media, or watching adult videos.
- What kind of relationship do you want?
Find out what kind of relationship your partner is looking for. It is also important to know whether he wants to be in a committed relationship, or an open relationship, or what he thinks about the future of your relationship.
- How it feels to be together
Jeff suggests asking your partner how they see being together. Or does he want to live separately? Is moving in together a step toward marriage, or a test to see how things go? How does your partner see society?
- What kind of fun things do you like in the bedroom?
It’s about understanding each other’s preferences. Knowing this can make you feel prepped or excited as things get closer. And you will also understand how similar your views are with your partner.
- What is your biggest concern about us?
Talk about any concerns your partner may have about your relationship. It’s great to open up and share concerns. These will help ease your mind on him, or it could be something you both can work out together.
- Are you ready to be my main emotional support, and what does that mean to you?
Jeff suggests asking if your partner is willing to be there for you emotionally. If not, see if you can get that support from friends or family instead.
- What is your biggest focus right now?
Knowing where your partner spends most of their time and energy is important. Work, school, family, friends, parties or anything else, wherever your partner spends time. It may also change over time.
- Does anyone else still think of you as their own?
Better to ask that than asking if your partner is currently in a relationship. Because of this, you can also find a profit triangle, if any.
- What else do I need to know if we want to move forward together?
This open-ended question can help you learn something important about your partner. This question can also lead to honest and meaningful answers.
- Should we avoid questions that might make us think later and strain our relationship before we can enjoy it?
Jeff says this is probably the first question you should ask your partner. It is also important to be honest before asking any questions about anything.
